Pros and Cons of Remote Coding

Do you realize that when you get a remote coding job there will be days, weeks and often months you will not have any work?   Yes it is true.  It does not matter whether the company hires you are a employee or if they hire you as a contract 1099 employee.

Why you ask?   The biggest loss of work is when a contract renews or does not renew.  Most remote jobs are bid for a backlog, or a yearly contract.  When the backlog is completed the company you are working for might get the contract for the rest of the year and then again maybe they won't.     And if the company bid on the work for a year when that year ends depending on the facility budget the contract might be renewed for another year.    That is why I tell everyone to ask questions when they are either recruited for a position or during the hiring process.

Another Con is that often they don't buy your books or provide any supplies.  If you are one of those people who often asks a co worker about how to code something you are going to have to develope other ways to get your answers.

There will be no personal interaction so if you are a social person this might not be for you.

You need to know the type of work you are going to be doing and how long the contract is for.   When this contract ends do they have other work they have for you.    Do they have a policy about you working for other companies?    What hours do they expect you to work? What is the end date for this project.  Is this a backlog or a yearly contract?

Let's talk about the Pros.   Depending on the company you work for very often as long as you work your 4 or 8 hours per day ; you can work anytime that works for you.  Lets say you are going to school in the morning then you can go to school do your errands and then start your remote work.   One of the most appealing reasons to work remote is no office politics.   You will save gas money and of course clothing.  You can listen to music,  you can use the internet to find resources for coding problems.    Working my own schedule is the most important part for me.
